During the early period of the Spanish Seaborne Empire the cross, the gold and the sword were intertwined in a lethal alloy. The birth of Americascrutinizes the intense debates that took place in Renaissance Spain about the righteousness of war, the nature of the "Indians" and the foundations of international law. The study focuses on some of the major Spanish thinkers in the 1600-century, such as Bartolomé de las Casas, Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda and Francisco de Vitoria. It takes as its point of departure the overwhelming repercussions - philosophical, theological and political - that the so called "discovery" of the New World had on the Spanish and European understanding of its place and identity in the world.
